Korean webtoons are even now being converted into Japanese anime, with the Crunchyroll original series Tower of God being the most noteworthy example (more on the Tower of God manhwa below).
Here’s a comprehensive list of the best manhwa available right now. But, before we get into the best webtoons, we need to clear up a few misconceptions: what is manhwa and where can I read it?
What exactly is a Korean Manhwa Webtoon?
When discussing Korean comics, fans will use both or either of the terms manhwa and webtoons interchangeably.
So, if you’re wondering what the difference is between manhwa and webtoons, the answer is that there isn’t one. They are simply two titles for Korean comics, similar to how manga is the name for Japanese comics.
If you want to get technical, there is one distinction: the term manhwa is traditionally reserved for Korean comics (much like how manga are created by Japanese writers and artists).
However, the term “webtoon” has come to refer to any and all comics produced online. As a result, while all manhwa are webtoons, not all webtoons are manhwa.
This, however, is a technicality that will most likely be argued all over the internet, much like the age-old controversy of whether Avatar: The Last Airbender is an anime.
Manhwa/webtoons, like American comics and Japanese manga, come in a variety of styles and genres. There are numerous fantasy manhwa with intriguing and unique worlds to immerse yourself in.
If you want to dive in a deep ocean of romance manhwa, you can. There’s also a lot of mature manhwa out there.
What distinguishes manhwa webtoons from Western comics and Japanese manga is their ease of use. Reading manhwa is simple and convenient due to their digital nature.
Where Can I Find Manhwa to Read Online?
If you’re a fan of Western comics, Japanese manga, or both, you’ll understand how physical these mediums are.
People in Japan spend their days reading and collecting weekly editions of Shonen Jump. Manga can also be purchased as tankobon collections from bookshops and comic book stores worldwide.

Tapas and webtoons
Webtoon and Tapas are the two most popular apps for reading manhwa online for free. Both are free, but there are notable distinctions.
Tapas also publishes novels, whereas Webtoon is the more popular and solely dedicated to manhwa (as its name implies).
Anyone may also become a creator on Webtoon and upload their own comic series for people to enjoy for free.
This means that many of Webtoon’s creators are not Korean. They might come from anyplace.

Webtoon is also legal. It is the official website for reading online manhwa.
However, there is a popular site for reading webtoons online that is not free, and it is worth noting. Lezhin is a site that delivers premium manhwa, with a focus on mature manhwa (one of which will be detailed below).
If you’re willing to pay for premium, mature manhwa, Lezhin is the place to go.

However, these are some of the most intriguing manhwa series of recent years, and they are an excellent location to begin reading manhwa online.
The Hellbound by Yeon Sang-Ho and Choi Gyu-Seok
The Hellbound is a ridiculously fascinating series that is easily one of the world’s best manhwa right now. This is a thriller and a half that is accessible to read on Webtoon as well as in bookstores.
This manhwa was created by famed Korean film director Yeon Sang-Ho, the mastermind behind Train to Busan, one of the best zombie films ever made.
Not only that, but Yeon Sang-Ho is also the director of The Hellbound’s Netflix version, just as Katsuhiro Otomo wrote, drew, and directed both the Akira manga and film.
As for the plot, The Hellbound is about a horrifying new global phenomenon: regular people start receiving “notices.”
These warnings contain three simple statements: the person’s name, the knowledge that they are on their way to hell, and how much time they have left.
This period can be as short as three days or as long as twenty years. When your time is up, terrible apparitions arrive (not subtly) to brutalize your body and drag you off to hell.
In reaction to this horrific transformation in everyday life, a cult emerges that argues this is divine retribution from God intended to improve us as individuals and as a society.

Tower of God, by SIU
Tower of God is, and has been for some time, one of the best manhwa on the internet. Tower of God, created by a writer/artist solely known as SIU, is a fantasy manhwa with millions of readers.
You may have heard of the Tower of God manhwa because it was turned into a Crunchyroll Original animation in 2020.
Tower of God (Sin-ui Tap), which is free to read on Webtoon, depicts the narrative of Bam, a youngster who has lived his life beneath the titular tower with only his buddy Rachel for company.
However, when the story begins, Rachel abandons Bam and heads into the tower, leaving Bam little choice but to follow her.
The tower is a mysterious and magical location full of strange and unbelievable environments. People enter the tower hoping to reach the summit; along the way, they will battle terrible opponents and overcome difficult tasks. But all Bam wants is to find Rachel.

Bastard
Without a question, the Bastard manhwa is one of the most hyped and exhilarating thrill rides in the manhwa world.
It’s a genre-bending rollercoaster that takes almost every reader by surprise, making it one of the most important reads among top manhwa online right now.
Bastard, written by Carnby Kim and illustrated by Youngchan Hwang, is about an adolescent kid whose father is a serial killer.
But from the outside, he doesn’t appear to be that way. Everyone except Seon Jin believes his father is a hard worker and a good citizen.
Underneath it all, he’s a murderer, and he employs his son to assist him in his atrocities. Meanwhile, Seon Jin is the quiet loser at school, frequently harassed and always lonely. When he finishes school, he returns home to his murderer of a father.
Bastard is an important Korean manhwa that should not be spoiled. Enter with as little knowledge as possible, and let its twists and turns lead you on an incredible journey.
This is a genre-bending manhwa. It is mostly a thriller, but there are also aspects of horror and romance.
Few manhwa will astound you like Bastard. I guarantee it.
Seasons of Blossom
Seasons of Blossom, written by HONGDUCK and illustrated by NEMONE, is a heartfelt romance manhwa with a strong emphasis on friendship. That focus is what sets this top mahwa apart so far, and it is what so many readers find appealing.
The friendship dynamics on exhibit here, as well as the manner in which they tie into and stymie the burgeoning relationships, highlight the fragility of friendship, especially as we grow and change.
Seasons of Blossom opens with a love triangle: the most popular boy and girl at school (Jaemin and Bomi) are perfect for each other.

Sweet Home
Sweet Home is a Korean take on the zombie apocalypse that became popular after Netflix converted it into a live-action series.
Youngchan Hwang and Carnby Kim, the writer/artist team behind the Bastard webtoon, created the Sweet Home webtoon, which follows a melancholy high school student named Hyun Cha who, shortly after relocating to a tower block, is caught up in the end of the world as part of an eclectic ensemble of survivors.
It doesn’t take much digging to realize that Korean novels, films, TV episodes, and webtoons are the greatest at twisting and revitalising stale genres and clichés.
Sweet Home, like the film Train to Busan, injects much-needed excitement into the zombie horror genre.
Sweet Home’s threat is a slew of bizarre and different monsters, rather than a standard zombie apocalypse (think Junji Ito but more cartoonish).
While the plot remains a zombie apocalypse survival story, substituting zombies with colorful and unusual monsters adds a lot of color and flair to the story.
The cast’s color matches that of the creatures. Our survivors, who are all holed up in a Seoul tower block, must work together to prevent turning against one another while the monsters are at the gate. The verticality of the tower block adds to the action’s energy.
Sweet Home manhwa art is more in the manner of Western comics than Japanese manga.
The shapes, angles, expressions, and color palette all contribute to Sweet Home’s new and distinct feel, elevating it to one of the finest manhwa to read right now.
Webtoon has a free version of the Sweet Home manhwa.
Solo Leveling
Chu-Gong Solo Leveling’s web novel was translated into a Korean webtoon in 2018 and has since gone on to become one of the top manhwa on everyone’s lips. Its popularity is astounding, and with good cause.
The Solo Leveling manhwa, as the title suggests, is about a low-level monster hunter who starts his quest at E rank. The hunter’s guild pays him peanuts for his poor rank, and he must support his sick mother.
Sung Jin Woo, who is still green and weak, is overpowered in a monster dungeon and meets his end fast.
However, he soon wakes up in a hospital with new abilities that will give him an advantage in advancing to the coveted S level.
Sung Jin Woo’s new abilities allow him to see the world as a video game, giving him the advantage he needs to level up and attain the highest rank of monster hunter.
Solo Leveling’s art is clear and energetic, with a vibrant and appealing color palette that helps it stand out in a crowded medium, just like its likeable and determined protagonist.
The Player
Given the popularity of esports, online gaming, and PC rooms (known in Korea as PC bang), it’s no wonder that one of the most popular manhwa online is a series called The Gamer.
Sangyoung Seong wrote The Gamer, which was illustrated by Sang-A. If you like isekai anime or the novel Ready Player One (no judgment), you’ll enjoy The Gamer manhwa.
The Gamer depicts the story of Jihan, a typical high schooler whose life is turned upside down when he gets the capacity to see the world as if it were a computer game.
Suddenly, his eyes have a heads-up display, and he can see everyone’s ‘power levels’ around him.
Jihan quickly discovers that he is not alone, that his best buddy has been living with this Ability for years, and that the Abyss is a secret underground realm of other Ability-users.
The Gamer manhwa is available for free on Webtoon.
Noblesse
Easily one of the most well-known top manhwa. If you’re an anime enthusiast, you’ve undoubtedly heard of Noblesse; perhaps you scrolled past it while perusing Crunchyroll. Noblesse manhwa was so popular that it was adapted into a Korean anime in 2015.
The Noblesse manhwa is a fantasy action series written by Son Jae Ho and illustrated by Lee Gwang Su. It is based on classic gothic literature themes and chronicles the modern-day life of a vampire named Cadis Etrama Di Raizel (or just Rai) who has been sleeping for over eight centuries.
Rai has awoken and finds himself in modern-day Korea, where he meets and transforms a child named Frankenstein into a servant (really).
Rai forms a colorful company of characters after enrolling in a local high school, and they set out to find the details of Rai’s background while fighting back against an evil and dangerous cabal.
From 2007 to 2019, the Noblesse manhwa ran for twelve years and is certainly one of the best manhwa online right now. It’s a terrific binge read because it’s all wrapped up. Then there’s the anime version.
The Noblesse manhwa is available for free on Webtoon.
DICE
DICE: The Cube That Changes Everything is the full title. Hyunseok Yun developed the DICE manhwa, a fantasy series. The series debuted in 2013 and was one of the first webtoons to receive an English translation.
Dongtae, a shy and constantly bullied adolescent, is having a difficult time in life. That is, until he befriends Taebin, the new transfer student.
Taebin introduces Dongtae to the realm of Dicers, people who obtain and employ enigmatic cubes known as dice.
Depending on the outcome of the roll, the titular dice grant the roller an increase in various attributes ranging from strength to beauty to intelligence.
More dice can be earned by fulfilling objectives assigned by the Game Master X.
The DICE manhwa is available for free on Webtoon.
The God of High School
The God of High School manhwa began in 2011, and an English translation was released in 2014.
This is another popular manhwa that you’ve definitely heard of because of its 2020 Crunchyroll anime adaptation, animated by studio MAPPA.
The God of High School is a martial arts action manhwa created by Yongje Park that recounts the exploits of Mori Jin, a 17-year-old high-schooler in Seoul.
His preferred martial art is taekwondo, and his goal is to win the God of High School event.
The God of High School competition, sponsored by a mysterious, shadowy corporation, guarantees its victor the big reward of anything their heart desires. This is a series that places a high value on violent martial arts action.
The God of High School manga is available for free on Webtoon.
This is an older online webtoon series, having concluded in 2014. As a result, the Cheese in the Trap manhwa has earned classic status.
Soonkki’s Cheese in the Trap is widely regarded as one of the best manhwa to read online.
Cheese in the Trap was such a popular manhwa in Korea that it was converted into a k-drama of the same name.
The original Cheese in the Trap manhwa is a college drama about a perfect student named Seol who returns to university after taking a break.
When she meets and develops an entangled connection with wealthy “Mr. Yoo Jung’s life becomes exasperatingly complicated.
Cheese in the Trap is a romantic drama about social inequalities, poisonous relationships, and the complexities that love and romance bring.
Webtoon has a free version of the Cheese in the Trap manhwa.
The Night Painter
All of the manhwa webtoons included on this list are freely available on Webtoon. The Painter of the Night manhwa, on the other hand, is a BL (boys’ love) manhwa series that is classified as mature.
The first two chapters are free, but the remainder must be purchased.
The Painter of the Night manhwa is one of the most popular on Lezhin; it is a very popular queer romance webtoon.
This online manhwa depicts the story of Nakyum, a great painter.
A aristocrat named Seungho intrudes on Nakyum’s life just as he prepares to put his art behind him. Seunho, who has a strong desire to paint, hires Nakyum as his personal painter.
Disclaimer: I haven’t read this manhwa yet because it isn’t free, but I’ve included it on this list because of its enormous popularity and the fact that it is the #1 manhwa on Lezhin.
As a result, I cannot personally suggest it, but the popularity of the manhwa speaks for itself.
The Painter of the Night manhwa is available (for a fee) on Lezhin.
Moms by Yeong-shin Ma
While Moms is a Korean manhwa (and one of the best I’ve ever read), it isn’t available online. This one must be purchased in person. It’s published by the wonderful people at Drawn & Quarterly.
Moms immediately reminds me of Natsuo Kirino’s dark and twisted Japanese novel Out (which you should read if you haven’t already).
It stars three middle-aged mothers who are fed up with their low-paying careers and lousy boyfriends/husbands. They are entitled to more from life than this grind.
If you’ve read the book Out, you’ll be expecting slaughter, murder, and gangsters. Moms, on the other hand, takes a different approach, transporting us to a darkly comedic world of hedonism and experiencing life as a twenty-something.
Tired of bad men and bad days at work, our titular mums go to pubs and clubs to enjoy men and drink and have fun for themselves. Moms is a classic black comedy and a must-read manhwa.
Bad Friends by Ancco
Like Moms, Bad Friends is a Korean manhwa that must be purchased in person rather than read online, but it is well worth the price if you enjoy gloomy stories.
The direct approach to narrative storytelling that distinguishes Bad Friends as one of the best manhwa on the market.
Janet Hong’s graphic memoir Bad Friends portrays the heartbreaking story of Pearl, a teenage girl growing up in the tough neighborhoods of 1990s South Korea.
Every day is a nightmare for Pearl, whose violent father repeatedly beats her to the point of death.
She eventually leaves home with her battered schoolfriend Jeong-ae and is thrust into a world that is merciless, violent, abusive, and indifferent.
We are confined in this world just as she is, from the first charcoal-soaked page, which depicts a small girl lighting a cigarette on her balcony, a dark and towering alley at her back, and a second balcony overhead boxing her in.
There is no conversation here, only the silent suburban bleakness with our lone protagonist slumped, deflated, and pitiful, with a cigarette clamped between her teeth.
Ancco’s signature style is one of dense blackness: rough lines divide the globe, and deep charcoal darkness frequently soaks her night skies.
It’s not a happy story, but it takes place in a world we know far too little about. Learning is frequently a difficult but important experience. It’s also cathartic.
A Werewolf Boy
This manhwa series is based on a Korean movie of the same name that was released in 2012. It’s about a girl named Shi Woo who lives with her abusive father and brother. One day, she meets a strange boy with a wolf-like appearance and falls for him. As it turns out, he has special powers and is actually a werewolf. The story follows the strange relationship between Shi Woo and the werewolf boy as they are forced to leave their home and live elsewhere.
This series originally appeared on Daum from 2012 to 2013, but it was then translated into English by LINE Webtoon in 2016. It’s now available on their app and website, as well as Manga Plus and Tapas.
The series is rated T for Teen for violence, horror, and mild language. The main characters are Shi Woo (17) and the werewolf boy (15).
Alice in Manhwa Land
Alice in Manhwa Land is a list of manhwa titles that are similar to various manga. The list was created by manga and manhwa fans who were looking for good titles similar to their favorite manga series. It’s not an official website, but it does include reviews from fans who have read the comics.
There are several titles on the list that are similar to Attack on Titan. For example, The Breaker: New Waves is described as “for fans of AoT looking for something similar.” Likewise, I AM (I Awaken) is a “spin-off of The Breaker with a slightly different premise” (check out our review).
Likewise, there are several titles on the list that are similar to Tokyo Ghoul. For example, The God of High School is described as “for fans of Tokyo Ghoul looking for something similar.” Likewise, Tower of God (신의 탑) is a “fantasy-themed action/adventure series with a large cast and every character has a unique story and hidden past” (check out our review).

Bromance
If you love the romantic comedy manga Oh My Ghost (Onna no Ko o Suru Houhou) by Mizuki Mizushiro, you’ll want to check out Bromance. The series follows the ups and downs of a relationship between two male university students, one of whom is an aspiring actor.
Unlike Oh My Ghost, Bromance is a more serious manhwa that deals with real-life issues, such as coming out and bullying. It also tackles more serious topics such as depression and suicide. The story is set in a university dormitory where two roommates are dealing with relationship issues and bullying.
Bromance is written by Gukje Kim and illustrated by Sangwoo Park. The first volume was published in 2015, and the series is on hiatus with eight volumes available so far. It has been translated into English, French, and Spanish.
Have a Nice Day!
Have a Nice Day! (이게 좋은 생일이 되세요) is a slice-of-life webtoon about the employees of a bookstore and cafe called “B&B.” The main character, Hana, is the new employee.
The webtoon is published by the South Korean publisher LINE and is available for free on LINE’s LINE Webtoon platform. The chapters are released weekly in both English and Korean.
Have a Nice Day! is one of the first webtoons that LINE Webtoon translated into English. The original Korean version was released online in 2012 and became popular in 2014 with its relatable storyline and quirky characters. It was translated into English in 2016.
The series follows Hana as she tries to adjust to her new job at this unusual bookstore and cafe owned by the unconventional Bong Sang-sun. The bookstore part features a cat who roams around the store greeting customers and eating treats. In the cafe, customers can get coffee drinks and snack on delicious pastries while they enjoy reading books from B&B’s extensive collection.
My ID is Gangnam Beauty
My ID is Gangnam Beauty is a popular webtoon about plastic surgery and identity. The main character, Kang Mi-reun, wants to become beautiful. So she does what many young women do these days—she gets plastic surgery. However, the surgery goes wrong, and she ends up looking very different from her old self.
Mi-reun doesn’t let the accident stop her from reaching her goals. She becomes a top student at one of the best universities in South Korea and lands a dream internship at a big company in Seoul. She also meets a handsome guy who likes her for who she is.
The story isn’t just about looks though. It’s also about family, friendships, romance, and career struggles. There are also serious topics such as bullying and discrimination against those who are different.
If you love a good story that has layers of meaning and depth (without being too serious), then you will love this webtoon.
Sumomomo Momomo, aka The Moron’s Guide to Magic
Sumomomo Momomo follows the adventures of a young witch who, in the very first chapter, accidentally turns her brother into a dinosaur. The series has a lot of magical hijinks and is similar to the classic series, Sailor Moon. The main characters are witches who attend the Witch Academy and learn how to use their magic. Witches aren’t the only ones with supernatural abilities; there are also werewolves and vampires.
The art alternates between black-and-white and color pages. It’s fairly censored with light censoring for violence and nudity. However, there are still some instances of nudity shown as well as some violence and blood shown.
Sumomomo Momomo has been adapted into an anime series that’s available on Funimation, Hulu, and Crunchyroll. The original webtoon is available in English on LINE Webtoon (www.webtoon.com) with new episodes added on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
The Sound of a Flower
The Sound of a Flower is a historical romance that tells the story of a Korean princess who falls in love with an undercover Japanese agent. The princess, Hae Soo, is trained to be an international spy who will infiltrate the Japanese Imperial Palace. She becomes an expert in the Japanese martial art form of kendo and excels at playing the koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.
While on a mission to Japan, she meets a handsome young man named Masud, who sparks her romantic interest. But when she discovers that he is actually a spy for the Japanese, her mission becomes one of subterfuge and deception as she tries to figure out how to deal with her conflicted feelings for this man.
As it turns out, Masud is actually Ranmaru and he’s actually not a real spy at all—he’s actually an undercover agent sent to infiltrate the Japanese empire by Korea. But who knows if he’s really on the right side?
The Bride of the Water God
The Bride of the Water God is a fun and lighthearted manga with a fantasy twist. The heroine, Soah, washes up on the shores of an ancient kingdom, and the king decides she’s the one who will be sacrificed to appease the Water God in exchange for good harvests. However, Soah is unimpressed by the king and refuses to marry him, much to his annoyance.
There’s a catch—Soah has seven days to win over the king or she’ll be killed. But Soah has other plans, and she’s going to become one of the most powerful women in history. The Bride of the Water God is a true fantasy romance with plenty of magic and intrigue.
The series was originally published in South Korea by Haksan Culture Company in 2001. You can read it for free online thanks to an English translation by LINE Webtoon.
To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts
To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts is a long-running series that follows the story of a group of people who were chosen to become Sacred Beasts, a team of powerful beings who protect the world from evil. However, these Sacred Beasts were abandoned on Earth as young children and had to make their way through life as normal humans.
The first volume in the series was published in July 2011 and is still ongoing. This title is unique in that it features characters with disabilities, such as autism and hemophilia. It’s one of the longest running manhwa titles available online, so there are plenty of volumes you can read through. To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts has also been translated into other languages, such as French, German, and Spanish.
The artwork in To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts is drawn in a unique style that uses an assortment of colors and shades. This title is highly rated and won several international awards, including the Korea Times Comics Awards and the Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival Awards.
Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle, aka Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis
Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle is an action fantasy webtoon created by Sunghyun Oh. It’s based on the Bahamut franchise and revolves around a hero named Lux who’s in training to become a knight. One day, he finds out about his true identity and goes on a journey to try to save the world.
The story is about the main character, Lux, an ordinary boy who dreams of becoming a hero like his mother.
